Friends

Milton seemed to have had the gift of friendship, and throughout his life maintained cordial, even close, personal relationships with people who were his opposites in religion, politics, and temperament. I think it is his most appealing personal characteristic, and worth keeping in mind at points when his prose reaches towards the vituperative.
